Change in the composition of liquid petroleum gas is the cause for the recent spate of domestic gas cooker explosions, the Shantha Walpola committee has said. The Committee headed by Professor Shantha Walpola was appointed by the President to probe the reasons for the high incidence of explosions. There had been over 700 such explosions during a short period causing concern among the general public. The Vinivida Peramuna filed public interest litigation in the Court of Appeal, where the court intervened to set standards for the domestic gas cylinders. The Gas distribution companies have undertaken to distribute gas cylinders with the SLSI certification with a clear indicator on the cylinders.
