Court hands 200-260 year jail terms over 2019 Easter attacks

The Permanent Trial-at-Bar, on Tuesday night, sentenced 15 people to rigorous imprisonment terms ranging from 200 to 260 years after convicting them on charges including conspiracy and aiding and abetting the 2019 Easter Sunday terrorist attacks.

The sentences were imposed by a three-judge bench comprising Navarathna Marasinghe, Ramanathan Kannan and Sujeewa Nissanka following Tuesday's verdict in the case against 24 accused. 15 were convicted.

One convict was sentenced to 260 years of rigorous imprisonment, four received 240-year terms, five were sentenced to 220 years and another five received 200-year terms.

The court also ordered the confiscation by the state of all movable and immovable property belonging to those convicted.

The case involved more than 23,270 charges linked to the Easter Sunday attacks, including conspiracy and providing assistance in connection with the bombings.

A total of 2,309 prosecution witnesses testified in the case filed by the Attorney General.
