Police step up checks for drug-impaired and drunk drivers

Police have intensified checks for motorists driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol in an effort to reduce fatal and serious road accidents.

Deputy Inspector General of Traffic Control and Road Safety W. P. J. Senadheera said traffic officers across the country had been instructed to strengthen enforcement.

Police analysis has identified drug use, drunk driving, dangerous and careless driving and fatigue as major causes of serious crashes, he said.

Senadheera said particular attention would be paid to drivers of tipper trucks, lorries, three-wheelers and passenger buses.

Police have already arrested a number of bus drivers and conductors who tested positive for drugs, with several drivers having their licences suspended following court proceedings.

The public has also been asked to send videos of dangerous or suspected drug- or alcohol-impaired bus drivers to the police WhatsApp number 070 475 5600, ensuring the vehicle registration number is clearly visible.

Police said they would take strict action against offenders based on information received.
