More than 10 hospitalised after multi-vehicle crash on Southern Expressway

More than 10 people, including several schoolchildren, have been admitted to hospital on Monday following a multi-vehicle accident on the Southern Expressway between Gelanigama and Dodangoda.

The accident involved a bus travelling from Matara to Colombo and several other vehicles.

Reports said a bus carrying schoolchildren collided with a cab, triggering a chain collision involving vehicles travelling behind them.

Two buses, six cars and several other vehicles were involved in the accident.

Following the crash, police diverted vehicles travelling from Galle towards Colombo through the Dodangoda exit.

Severe traffic congestion has developed between Gelanigama and Dodangoda as a result of the accident and the obstruction to the expressway.
