Parliamentary committee questions police officials over Cyclone Ditwah response

A Parliamentary Select Committee examining Sri Lanka’s preparedness for Cyclone Ditwah has questioned senior police officers involved in the disaster response, Parliament’s Department of Communication said.

The Committee, chaired by Health and Mass Media Minister Dr Nalinda Jayatissa, summoned several Senior Superintendents of Police and Superintendents of Police from districts affected by the cyclone.

The officers were asked to provide details of the measures taken by police before, during and after the disaster.

Former MP Nimal Piyatissa also appeared before the Committee and was questioned about comments he had made to the media concerning the authorities’ response to the cyclone.

The Select Committee has been tasked with conducting a comprehensive review of the country’s preparedness and response to Cyclone Ditwah and submitting a report to Parliament with recommendations for improving disaster management.

Members of Parliament serving on the Committee also attended the meeting.
