Irrigation Dept warns of minor flooding along Kelani River

The Department of Irrigation yesterday warned of possible minor flooding in low-lying areas of the Kelani River Valley within the next 24 hours following heavy rainfall in the upper and middle catchment areas of the basin.
The flood warning, issued at 3.30 pm (today (3), will remain in effect until 3.30 pm tomorrow (4).
According to the Department, significant rainfall has been recorded in the upper and middle reaches of the Kelani River Basin, and an analysis of water levels at river gauges indicates that a minor flood situation could develop over the next 24 hours.
The warning applies to low-lying areas within the Divisional Secretariat divisions of Dompe, Seethawaka, Homagama, Kaduwela, Biyagama and Kolonnawa.
The Department also cautioned that current weather forecasts indicate the likelihood of further heavy rainfall, which could result in a rapid rise in river water levels.
Residents living in low-lying areas, river users and motorists travelling through the affected areas have been advised to exercise extreme caution and remain vigilant.
Disaster management authorities have also been requested to take the necessary precautionary measures in response to the developing situation.
