Reservoir levels fall sharply in eastern Sri Lanka

Water levels in reservoirs have declined most sharply in the Ampara, Batticaloa and Trincomalee districts, the Department of Irrigation said.

Reservoir storage in Ampara has fallen to 22.8 per cent of capacity, while Batticaloa stands at 25.7 per cent and Trincomalee at 28.2 per cent.

Despite the decline, the department said reservoirs used primarily to supply drinking water were not facing any immediate problems.

Meanwhile, the Mahaweli Water Management Secretariat said reservoirs under its control currently hold about 57 per cent of their total capacity.

Water levels in Mahaweli reservoirs used for hydropower generation stand at around 65 per cent, the secretariat said.
