Drug use, threats linked to death of 17-year-old Kilinochchi girl

A 17-year-old girl from Koonavil in Kilinochchi died by suicide on Sunday following what police investigations have described as a troubled relationship involving alleged threats, demands for money and drug use.
Investigations have revealed that the young man who had been in a relationship with the girl had repeatedly obtained money from her, allegedly to buy drugs.
Police said the girl had even handed over jewellery to him because she was afraid of his threats.
Investigators further allege that the young man later introduced the girl to different types of drugs and that she subsequently became accustomed to using them.
Police said the girl had argued with her boyfriend on the day of her death.
A letter believed to have been written by the girl before her death reportedly contained details of the relationship and the circumstances she had faced.
The young man accused in connection with the incident has reportedly fled the area.
A post-mortem examination is due to be conducted at Kilinochchi Hospital, while police investigations are continuing.
